Lake Izunuma-Uchinuma is a 4-square-kilo-meter low-lying wetland located in the Senpoku Plain in Miyagi Pref. This region is located in Japan's northernmost temperate zone, which has minimal snowfall and is not prone to freezing. Thus it has excellent conditions for most wintering waterfowl. As Lake Izunuma-Uchinuma is very shallow, there are various aquatic plants on the surfaces, making the area an environment with abundant vegetation. Furthermore, it supports a variety of creatures such as dragonflies, fish, and waterfowl. In order to pass on the beautiful natural environment of the Izunuma-Uchinuma area to future generations, various protection and conservation projects have been continually carried out. In 1985 by the Ramsar Convention, it was designated as an internationally important wetland for waterfowl habitat. The Miyagi Prefectural Izunuma-Uchinuma Environmental Foundation environment through projects that contribute to regional promotion and social welfare. In particular, the foundation has carried out various projects, for example, water purification, wetland restoration, and playing an important role in conserving the Izunuma-Uchinuma environment. In 1996, the sound of White-fronted Geese in Lake Izunuma-Uchinuma was selected as one of Japan's top 100 melodic landscapes. Also, with the cooperation of regional citizens, nature-watching expeditions, photo and art exhibits are continuously being carried out. Lake Izunuma-Uchinuma, with many people living in its surrounding area, is an invaluable wetland to demonstrate the coexistence of nature and people.

伊豆沼・内沼は、 宮城県の仙北平野の中にある４平方Kmの低地湖沼です。 この地方は雪が少なく、 しかも凍りにくい地域の日本における北限地帯にあたり、 多くの水鳥が越冬できるすぐれた条件を備えています。 伊豆沼・内沼は大変浅い湖沼です。 このためにさまざまな水生植物が湖面を覆い、 豊かな植物環境がつくられています。 そしてトンボや魚、水鳥をはじめとする多様な生物相を育んでいます。 これまで伊豆沼・内沼 の自然を後世に残すため 保護保全のための様々な試みが続けられてきました。 １９８５年渡り鳥のための国際的に重要な湿地としての ラムサール条約の登録湿地となり、 １９８８年には、 「伊豆沼・内沼の環境保全及び活用に関する 総合的な施策の地域振興及び社会福祉への寄与」 を目的として、 宮城県伊豆沼・内沼環境保全財団が 設立されました。 特に水の浄化と湿地の保全に大きな役割を担ってきています。 １９９６年には、 「伊豆沼・内沼のマガン」が ２１世紀にのこす 「日本の音風景１００選」 のひとつに選ばれました。 また、地域住民の協力のもとに自然観察会や写真展、 絵画展なども積極的にとり行われています。 周囲にたくさんの人々が生活する 伊豆沼・内沼は、 自然と人間の共存をめざすかけがえのない湿地なのです。 所在地：東経141度05分52秒 北緯38度43分15秒
